Venice is infamous for romance, whatever the time of year. The buildings, the shapes and forms, the services on the outside of the buildings; it all has an equal balance of beauty and decay. I find the walls are just that. Where ever you go, a canal, campo or calle, there are the plastered areas of wall against bare bricks, infills, erosion, repairs, right next to decorated windows, columns and balconies. I took these photographs, from a gondola, except one. It was the first time I had paid attention to the walls that plunge into the water.
With the rising sea levels, there is a precariousness around the relationship between the buildings and the water. Once you start looking, you can see features that were once designed to stop above the water level, but now dsiappear below.










Crumbling walls are fascinating and walls crumbling into water are even more so!
